Cold Iron (Kindle Edition)
By Charles V. Henely
Review & Description
Henry Mullins had spent the last four years studying hard, and now that
he was about to graduate from engineering school he was finally getting
a social life. But his initiation into a role playing game didn't go
quite the way he expected. The bed-sheet toga didn't cause him any problems,
but the dive knife strapped to his leg was a major problem, but it was
also the key to his success in a new world.
The magical system of Cold Iron is based on the premise from Kipling's poem Cold Iron, “But Iron -- Cold Iron -- is master of them all.” Iron controls all the elements, and by using his iron a magician can manipulate the world around him. But, iron is anathema to the locals so that they are only able to deal with very small amount before suffering from iron poisoning, leading to painful and ugly death. Enter Henry Mullins, an engineering student from Earth, who not only has no problems with iron poisoning (after all, his earthly metabolism requires it and the hemoglobin in his blood contains it) but has a background in chemistry and physics. Science and technology as known on earth barely exist on Maath, where steel is totally unknown and magic has kept the physical sciences from being a priority. With no limit to how much iron he can use and a strong background in Earth science and technology, Henry, now known as Iron Hank, is able to create a variety of brute force spells to overcome the forces of evil that had been bearing down on his new home.
